Ukulele Classes for Winter, 2017!


Beginners  - A 10 week course for beginners:  a fun introduction to the magic of the ukulele!


Class Content:  

-Parts of the ukulele; how to hold the ukulele

-How to strum chords, and how to play individual notes.

-Basic strumming, involving the most common down and up patterns. 

-The most common beginning chords, including a variety of major, minor, and 7th chords.

-Understanding of key and chord families:  I, IV, V, V7 chords.   

-Working out the basic mechanics of playing and singing.

-Songs: Pop, folk, Christmas, gospel, blues, country,  - from traditional favourites to current pop songs.  All songs will have only a few chords.

-Learn to play instrumental melodies in first position and up the neck.

-Reading music notation, and TAB

-Playing by ear and/or from music notation.


Fee: $170 for 10 weeks.  Wednesdays,  Jan. 11 - March 15,  6:45-7:45 pm.  $10 for book and course materials.


Location:  St. James Community Square, 3210 W 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC.

Please bring a ukulele, folding music stand and if possible, a ukulele tuner.

Intermediate - A 10 week course for those who have successfully acquired beginner skills and who would like move on.  Here, you will develop important skills to allow you to build a foundation of being a versatile player capable of playing well across a variety of styles.


Class Content: 

-Learning notes on the whole fretboard.

-Exercises for developing greater finger control and ease of movement up the fretboard

-Full understanding of major keys and the chords involved. Common chord progressions.

-Introduction to minor keys: natural, harmonic, and melodic

-Variety of strumming techniques to add spice and rhythmic drive including muted strums, syncopation, accenting.

-Introduction to fingerstyle accompaniments.

-Introduction to barre chords and moveable chords.

-Transposition

-Songs :wide range of pop, rock, folk, blues, country, Christmas, and even disco.

-Introduction to ‘special effects’  including  hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides.


Fee: $170 for 10 weeks.  Wednesdays,  Jan. 11 - March 15, 8:00 - 9:00 pm.   $10 for book and course materials.

Intermediate 2 Class - By popular demand, I am now offering a 10 week session for intermediate to advanced players.  Each term, we will explore songs in different genres including  pop, rock, blues, country, swing, jazz, R&B, and reggae.   We will explore strums and fingerpicking accompaniment, soloing, and singing  lead and harmony vocal parts.   This is a continuation of the work from Intermediate 1.

   


Class Content Menu:

-Circle of 5ths, Blues Harmony, all kinds of 7th* chords in major and minor keys

-more advanced strums including percussive techniques and complex rhythms

-more fingerstyle accompaniments

-fretboard mastery: major, major pentatonic, minor pentatonic scales all over the fretboard,  and major, minor, and 7ths chord shapes all over the fretboard

-special effects including hammer-ons, pulloffs, bends, slides, and harmonics

-chord melodies,  including an introduction to how to create your own

-many fun songs featuring a wide range of styles, over a century of music


*includes dom 7ths, major 7ths, minor 7ths, dim 7ths, and minor 7th with flatted 5ths



Fee: $200 for 10 weeks.  Thursday, Jan 12 to March 16,   7:00 - 8:30 pm.   $10 for course materials.
